Needle is a search utility much like "locate" and its
companion "updatedb," except that Needle searches through
the contents of your files, not just their names. Like
"slocate," Needle also keeps track of file permissions and
ownership so that users will not see files they do not have
access to.
Needle was written by me. It heavily
borrows source code from slocate, which
was written by Kevin Lindsay and a number of contributors.
The searching and indexing functionality is provided by the
open source BeeGram library,
which was also mostly written by me, while I was employed at
Virtual
Unlimited.
Needle is licensed under the terms of the GNU General Public License (see also www.gnu.org).
